I put on a house concert this past Monday with one of my banjo heroes, the great Alan Munde.  We had 3/5 of the Alan Munde Gazette (Elliott Rogers and Nate Lee were here too) and they put on a great show.  I even got to play a few tunes with them, including a twin banjo version of Alan's "Peaches and Cream" with Alan playing harmony to my attempt at his original second solo.  Cool!  Maybe I can get that onto YouTube eventually...
We have quite a few shows coming up next month.  Stay tuned!  See the appearances page for details for all of these.

October 19, 2011
Amanda is well into her first semester at UF and we've taken it easy for the past couple of months.  But we have a private gig this Saturday, then I have one with Gentle River (playing bass!) the following weekend.  Then Amanda and I have a Thursday night show with the band on Nov. 17, before I play a show that Saturday with my old friend and band boss Jim Hurst.  In December Amanda and I will be at Jaymer-Que in Valrico with the band.  As always,  see the appearances page for details for all of these.
I also just got back from a couple of weeks in Hawaii.  This was the great band at the Old Lahaina Luau.  Lap steel  really sounds good there!

Amanda and I have a bunch of gigs coming up this month.  We have a bunch with the Walker Brothers starting this Friday in Naples, FL, Saturday in Venice, FL then next week shows in Minnesota (including one at the Nechville banjo factory!) and Wisconsin.  Amanda will also be doing a duo gig at Satchel's on August 25 which is Thursday of the week she starts classes at UF.  See the appearances page for details for all of these.
And keep asking your DJ for cuts from Tales from the Swamp!

May 24, 2011
Well, Tales from the Swamp has been released to radio and is being played worldwide.  Ask your DJ for it!  Amanda and I are doing some shows soon as Amanda and Scott Anderson featuring the Walker Brothers.  We're booking shows now so stay posted and come and see us when you can.  Those boys can play!
We had a fun show last month at the Southern Music Rising festival in Monticello, FL.  It's a great festival in a really nice little town.  My old friend Gabe Valla even played a few tunes with us.

"Tales from the Swamp" is off to the plant and in production!  That didn't take long, now did it?  This project was actually begun 2 years ago and put on hold while Amanda and I began and completed our "Another Day" project.  I was lucky enough to have a team of wonderful guests including Amanda Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Barry Bales, Chris Brown, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Michael Godwin, Aubrey Haynie, Clay Hess, Byron House, Sierra Hull, Jim Hurst, Randy Kohrs, Claire Lynch, David McMillan, Missy Raines, Tommy Slaughter, Adam Steffey, Jason Thomas, Jarrod Walker, Tyler Walker, Austin Wilder, and Matt Wingate.  What a cast!

I'm getting close to finishing my new CD, "Tales From the Swamp."  Final mixing and mastering this week.  It will have a mix of things: bluegrass, Americana, country, Gypsy jazz, and perhaps songs from some yet-to-be-named genre.  The likely release date is March 1, 2011, but we shall see...

We've been busy playing quite a few shows, including one last month in frigid cold and sleet!  The Throttleback festival was a lot of fun in spite of those elements.  See the Appearances page to see where we'll be next.

I had a great time in Nashville last week for the IBMA convention.  I recorded on Monday and Tuesday at Scott Vestal's studio with Sam  Bush, Jim Hurst, Clay Hess, Sierra Hull, and Byron House.  Stuart Duncan will be adding fiddle also.  WOW.  At IBMA I saw some great music, met a lot of new friends, and got to meet a lot of the DJ's who have been (and will be) playing cuts from Another Day.  I even got to eat lunch with Alison Brown.

I had the great fortune of bring on vacation in Cashiers, NC and stumbling upon a festival there featuring my friends in Sierra Hull and Highway 111, the Isaacs, and Lizzie Long with my old friend Little Roy Lewis.  The surprise got even better when Little Roy told me, "We've got Earl Scruggs in the van there."  Wow.  I got to introduce Earl to Amanda and to talk with him for a while, and then hear him play a few tunes with the band.  Earl is 85 years old now and it was really great to see him and hear him play again.

We've just returned from Merlefest.  Very little rain this time, a little hot even, and more great music.  We met a guy on Saturday who let us check out his 1924 F-5.  Yep, a Loar.

I went to see Béla Fleck on his Throw Down Your Heart tour today, and then got to meet and talk with him afterwards.  He had some very interesting things to say.  Watch out for my interview with Béla in upcoming issues of Banjo Newsletter.

Here's a shot of Amanda and Scott with The Bluegrass Parlor Band in Miami, jamming with Special Consensus leader and IBMA President Greg Cahill.  Greg is a great guy and he really loves to pick!  I also got into a nice triple banjo jam with him and Armando Zuppa later that night.
Don't forget - the Suwannee Banjo Camp is next weekend.

This past weekend I was lucky enough to meet Tony Trischka, see his show, and interview him about his recent projects (watch Banjo Newsletter and The Midnight Flyer for this.)  I even got to make an attempt at a 2 player/1 banjo version of Follow the Leader with him.  Tony has been an amazing and very influential player for many years and is a fount of banjo knowledge.  It was an honor for me to meet him.  Thanks to my friend Bill Jones for bringing him to Tallahassee.

Amanda and I had a fun gig last night at Satchel's, and we had some fun last weekend at the Ron Block concert that my friend Kelly Emerson put on down in Sun City.  When I got there I got invited to play with Jarrod, Austin,Heather, and Kalyn to open for both shows.  Beth Lawrence also joined us for the first show.   They really sounded great, and Ron, Corey, Sierra and Beth put on a fantastic show.

We've had a few good things happening lately, and some more to come.  Come and see Amanda and I this month at Satchel's, then The Scott Anderson Band at the Fall Festival at Intensive Care Ministries in Summerfield, FL.  Amanda and I will be doing that one with old friends Mitch Corbin and Barbara Johnson - should be fun!  The Scott Anderson Band will be making a rare Alachua County appearance at The Great Outdoors Restaurant in High Springs, FL on December 6 also.   (see my "Appearances" page for more info.)  A few recent photos:

The Suwannee Banjo Camp this past weekend was a great time.  There were a lot of campers and a banjo-filled 3 days.  Thanks to co-directors Ken Perlman and Chuck Levy for doing such a great job with the camp.
I got to hang out and play with my old buddy Mark Johnson as well as a new one - the legendary Bill Keith.   I always love it when I get to know one of my heroes and they turn out to be great people.  He really made my weekend when he told me he enjoyed my playing.

Happy birthday to me.
Our show at Satchel's went very well.  We had a very good crowd (a few more than we had chairs!) and Satchel liked us enough to ask us to come back monthly, so watch out for more dates there.

January 15, 2008
I'll be playing with my daughter Amanda at Satchel's Pizza in Gainesville on Thursday, January 24.   This will be our first gig as a duo, doing some bluegrass and Americana with guitar, banjo, and fiddle.  Come on out for some music and the best pizza you'll find anywhere.

July 30, 2007
It's been a very busy summer for me with trips to New York City, Virginia, North Carolina, a night in Orlando to see my nephew Derek's band Orange Avenue, as well as a week in Matagalpa, Nicaragua on a medical/dental mission trip with folks from Grace UMC and Fort White UMC.  I've also continued playing electric and acoustic guitar with the Grace Praise Band on many weekends.   Of course, I have a few photos...
I met this Nicaraguan banjo player on our first night atthe mission house in Managua - no kidding.  He was playing with a couple of other guys for a birthday party across the street.  Note his homemade banjo.
I met this little guy on the street outside a tiny church in the village of Los Tres M's where we set up our medical and dental clinics one day.  I did have to scold him later for trying to run into a pig with his bike.

Orange Avenue at Universal CityWalk - my nephew Derek is the lead singer and this band rocks!  I'm really proud of him.  They have really good original tunes, great arrangements, and they put on a great show.  I think we may all be hearing a lot more from them.

I was fortunate enough to be a part of Grace UMC's first ever baseball mission trip to Nicaragua.  With the guidance of missionary Dave Cabot,  Alex Hart and Brady Borner (both retired pitchers in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization) along with Kevin Griffin, Dave Hutchings, and myself spent a week with the youth in several small towns (Corrinto, Chinindega, and Chichigalpa) teaching, coaching, and playing baseball while helping some  of the local pastors and young church leaders spread the good news of God's love.  The people were receptive to both the baseball and more importantly, God's Word.  We plan for this to become a regular thing.

I've just learned that Lonnie Knight, founder of the Withlacoochee Bluegrass Jamboree has passed away.  Lonnie was a hard working man who helped provide a lot of happiness for a lot of folks over the years.  I will always be grateful to him for being the  first to book my new bands - first with Endless Highway and later with The Scott Anderson Band.   He will be missed greatly.  Peggy and his family will continue the festival as a living memorial to Lonnie.

Last Friday I was at the Spirit of Bluegrass Festival in Live Oak.  It was a good festival (Larry Cordle put on a great show!) and I got to pick quite a bit with some old friends including Shannon Slaughter, Tuck Tucker, and a new one - Barry Berrier.  What a great time!

Then on Saturday I was at the Sawgrass Fiddle Contest at Paynes Prairie where I got to pick with some more old friends including Mitch Corbin, Jason Thomas, Corey, Jarrod and Tyler Walker (their dad Dave made me play bass - what a joke), Heather Franks and George Custer.  And to top it all off I got to meet and play with one of my heroes - Byron Berline.  Man, what a great day of music for me.

Last weekend SAB had a great time playing at Winterfest at the Spirit of the Suwannee park near Live Oak.  It was a really good festival.   We also got to hear The Chapmans and Alecia Nugent who both put on really good shows.

The Jim Hurst Band will be returning to Grace United Methodist Church in Gainesville on May 7. The JHB show last year was a great success and we're planning to see even more folks this time inside the newand bigger auditorium/sanctuary at Grace.  For more info click here.

I finally got around to putting up some more photos the the JHB Ireland tour - click here.

I've been playing my new Nechville Phantom for a few months now (including the Ireland tour) and it is absolutely the best-playing banjo I've ever held. It has a fantastic deep tone that I really love too. This one is really sort of a loaner while Tom Nechville is in the process of completing a custom inlay pattern that he is going to use on MY custom Phantom. I hope to have that one before SAB plays Winterfest in February.

Here's me and the Nechville in Kilworth, Ireland:

I had a great time in Ireland with the Jim Hurst Band.  We played some cool places with great crowds, got to see some wonderful scenery between gigs, and got to meet, hear, and even play with some wonderful Irish musicians.  Plans are in the works for a return trip next year.
Last weekend Jim and I were both instructors at the Riverbend Bluegrass Music Camp.  Dale and Veniece Kennedy put on this wonderful instructional weekend at their park in Ocillla, GA.  It's a very intimate and friendly setting and students and instructors alike had a great time.  On Friday and Saturday nights the instructors played a few tunes onstage.  I got to pick Saturday night with Jim Hurst, Missy Raines, and Randy Kohrs.  What a great bunch to pick with!

I'll be leaving tomorrow for a tour of Northern Ireland and Ireland with the Jim Hurst Band.  This will be a great trip and we'll be playing some cool places and seeing where some of the roots of bluegrass originated.   We hope to see you there.

Here are a few photos from the Bitterroot Bluegrass Festival in Montana.  Mark Dickerson puts on a great festival out there, and the view from the stage (or anywhere else) is hard to beat!  This was JHB's first show with Jim's son Brandon on bass.  I got to meet all the guys in Kane's River, and I also got to meet Greg Cahill and do a banjo workshop with him.  Julie Elkins of Kane's River did a couple of tunes with JHB on stage to close the show on Saturday night.  Thanks to Amanda Anderson for these photos.

September will be a busy month for me.  The Scott Anderson Band will be appearing at the Sertoma festival on Labor Day weekend.  Mid-month I'll be travelling up north to play shows in Kentucky, Ohio, and Michigan with the Jim Hurst Band.  At the end of the month I'll be playing at the Spirit of the Suwannee with my old friend Keith Tew.  See my Appearances page for more details.  Come out and heckle me sometime!

June will be a fairly eventful month for me starting with the Riverbend Music camp (which includes Jim Hurst and Missy Raines as instructors.)  The following weekend I'll have the luxury of playing a few shows as the banjo player for the Jim Hurst Band.  I am really looking forward to June!  See my "appearances" page for some more info and links.

I've just returned from the inaugural Lonesome River Band Music Fest at the Spirit of the Suwannee Park in Live Oak, Florida.  This was a great show and was a wonderful success!  Don Miller provided a stellar lineup of bands and Sammy Shelor, Ernie Evans and a wonderful staff (including myself!) worked hard to make things run smoothly.  This was the first time of putting on a show like this for Don and it really worked out well with nearly perfect weather and no major problems.   I saw a LOT of happy faces this weekend - fans, staff, and bands included.
Please remember that this will be an annual event.  Plan now for next year - there will be many more GREAT shows to come.

Long time no news...
Last weekend I had a great time playing with Gentle River at the Spirit of the Suwannee.  We opened for The Mark Newton Band (who put on a very good show!) and we even got Mark to sing with us.  We did Purple Valley Blues which I learned from Mark's version with the Heights of Grass.  He hadn't done it in so long he'd forgotten it, so I had to write out the words for him.  And then he nailed it.  This was a thrill for Darren and I especially because we've been Mark Newton fans since his time with the Heights of Grass, Knoxville Grass, and Virginia Squires.  And now we're fans of The Mark Newton Band.  Mark is just a great guy and a good friend.  After the show we got to sing a bunch of other great songs that we learned from him WITH him.

Sock Monkey (frontman for the Scott Anderson Band) had some well deserved vacation time and his first plane flight last week.  Unfortunately, he does have a little problem with motion sickness.
He enjoyed the trip anyway, and had some adventurous fun hiking and rock climbing.

MagFest was a lot of fun.  Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas put on their usual great shows and I saw some interesting new (to me, anyway) bands too:  the Hackensaw Boys come to mind.  I also got to see some old friends and meet some new ones.  I had a great time jamming with my old friend Tim Higgins, Jeff Pinkham and his son Josh (who is a great young mando player), and Jim Lauderdale.  I'm ready for Springfest!

Gentle River has been in the studio working on their debut CD.  This one will be an all gospel effort.  We expect it to be available sometime this summer.  I'll try to get a few photos from the sessions posted here soon.

Check out the band bios (they're finally up.)
Pioneer Days was a lot of fun for us, even though it was hot as heck.  The folks who braved the heat to see us had a good time.  Maybe next year we'll do it at night though.

Two great new CD's that you need to check out are Jim Hurst's "Second Son" and John Cowan's "Always Take Me Back."  Lots of great music on both of these!

Don't  forget to come to Pioneer Days in High Springs on May 4 .  I'll be performing as a duo with Darren Wainright at 11am and The Scott Anderson Band will play at 4pm.   Get a little more info about Pioneer Days at http://www.highsprings.com/events.php.

"The Gospel" has made it to #4 on Mediamazing's list of top-rated Bluegrass Hits, even bypassing "Man of Constant Sorrow"!
If you're around Sarasota next weekend, come see me and Sno Rogers.  That's always a fun show.

The Gospel from "Rivers" still sits at #6  for the third straight week on Mediamazing's list of top-rated Bluegrass Hits.  Log in, give Mediamazing a listen and vote for some "Rivers" music!
I'll be doing more shows with Sno Rogers in the near future...watch out for us.

I had a great time at the IBMA trade show and FanFest and met a lot of great people there.  I also got to meet in person a lot of folks who I'd already met through email and the telephone.  I also did several interviews for overseas radio programs.  Of course there wasn't much time for sleep - if you sleep you miss something.
It was great to see my buddy Jim Hurst win Guitar Player of the Year at the awards show.  He truly deserves it and was truly excited and flattered by it.  It was also nice to see my friend Missy Raines again be named Bass Player of the Year.

"Rivers" has been receiving excellent reviews from deejays all over the country (and from some other countries!)  Click here to see some of their comments.
I'm looking forward to the debut of the Scott Anderson Band at the Withlacoochee Bluegrass Festival on November 2.  I hope we'll see you there!

I finally got around to posting some Merlefest 2001 photos.
Check out the new  photos.  Here's George Clooney's singing voice in action:
If you liked "Raising Arizona", you'll love "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?".

It's hilarious, and its gets funnier each time you see it. Good music too!

Merlefest is next weekend and I'll be there. I should have some more good photos to post when I get back. I'm finally going to get to see Earl Scruggs play in person!

March 10, 2001
Well, I'm back!  I was in Scott Vestal's Digital Underground recording studio March 5-9, 2001 (see photos!) for the solo project I've been thinking about for a few years now.  It was a musically productive week!  We recorded originals from myself, Darren Wainright, and Gabe Valla and some other things that  I'd wanted to record for a long time (thanks to Mark Newton for helping me with some of the lyrics.)  My friend Scott Vestal co-produced and engineered this project and even makes one appearance on banjo and one on harmony vocals.  Other guests on the recording include Wayne Benson, John Cowan, Shelton Feazell, Aubrey Haynie, Jim Hurst, Rob Ickes,  and Missy Raines in addition to Gabe and Darren.  Please visit these folks' web pages through my Links page.  And be sure to check out the photos from the sessions!
I'm really excited about this project - it is a dream come true for me.  It will be on the Mato label.  I'll keep you posted about further developments on this page.

The new CD includes:

Purple Valley Blues (Rick Richardson)
Ruby Falls (Scott Anderson)
Ichetucknee (Scott Anderson)
Cuttin' Melons (Scott Anderson - Gabe Valla)
Satilla, So Deep (Darren Wainright)
I Will Run (D. Henson - T. Kelly)
Tyler and Amanda (Scott Anderson)
Mountain of Sorrow (Gabe Valla)
The One (Scott Anderson)
Hard Time Blues (Gabe Valla)
Old Carolina (James Randolph)
Nashville Blues (Earl Scruggs)
The Gospel (Charles Gearheart)
